MINDER 049 - FREE BROTHERS
To close of the year we have a special one off from 'Free Brothers', we can't tell you anything else but here's a fantastic write up which came in with the mix.
Snapping twigs sound like firecrackers when you're deep in the bush hiding from the bloodhounds. At least that’s what the Free Brothers: Buck Russell and Stretch Valentine tell me. What they won’t tell me though is why the fuck they were even on the run from the man in the first place. Well, because they had just escaped from a high security, government jail but the mystery lies in what put them inside in the first place. Buck tried to explain it to me one evening when we were out horse riding together but once the colts kicked neither the concept of time nor the string of consonants and vowels floating from our faces made much sense. A tale for another time perhaps.
The collection of songs before you today were passed to me along with two drifts to catch. One, it’s basically the soundtrack to their freedom. Two, it’s the catalyst for what comes next. Mr Stretch Valentine reassured me that the future of the Free Brothers is happening now and the destination is not important, “Everybody likes the ploughing but as soon as the seed is bed all you feel is remorse. So why spend your time beatifying the benefits when its the reaping that holds the enjoyment?” I think he’d escape from jail every week if he could and with the tale they’ve told me, I can’t blame him. Which sails me back to the first drift.
While not all of the songs were specifically caught by the brothers while on the lam, they all hold significance to junctures of their journey. It was the Ooh Poo Pah Doo Bar where they beguiled two unsuspecting tricks of their dresses in a game of dominoes. Dresses which allowed Buck and Stretch to Cissy Strut in drag along to the next town over.
It couldn’t have been easy making it as far as they did but as long as they had each other they were going to be fine, traveling as the did down to Mexico. Once equipped with their new identities they were too hot to stop. Where they are now and what exactly they’re up to I’m unsure of. The last I saw of them we were enjoying a succulent chinese meal. The bill came with a fortune cookie for me but none for them. It read ‘Why climb to the top; to fall down the other side. Just go hard ‘til you’re in the ground’ I don’t think it came from the restaurant. I looked up and they were gone.
